WORD WEDNESDAY: KERFUFFLE

Word Wednesday is sharing my love of words with you!  I like to build my vocabulary by doing things such as: subscribing to receive a daily notification from the Dictionary.com app; flipping randomly through my physical Webster’s dictionary; playing Words With Friends 2 on my cell phone; and doing crossword puzzles.

On random Wednesdays, I’ll post a word that either I had to look up its definition when I first came across it, or I simply like the way the word sounds or its meaning.   Some related items I may post on Wednesdays might be: a picture that represents Wednesday’s word; a scene or character from my book that illustrates the meaning of the word; or a quote from my novel that contains that word.

TODAY’S WORD: KERFUFFLE

Kerfuffle (ker-fuhf-uh l) A disorderly outburst or tumult.  Kerfuffle is a humorous word for a mostly non-humorous situation: some kind of disturbance, scandal or mess.  However, a kerfuffle usually isn’t 100% serious.  People talking loudly in public could be making a kerfuffle.  If a politician says something embarrassing by accident, it could cause a kerfuffle.  Often, people use this word when they think people are making too big a deal of something, as in “What’s the kerfuffle all about?”

I recently learned the word “kerfuffle” via one of my daily alerts from www.dictionary.com as its word of the day.  Before I even read the definition, I giggled.  The pronunciation of the word is so funny-sounding.  It made me think of someone sneezing:

“Ahhhhhh, kerfuffle!”

“Bless you!”

It also made me say the word quickly, several times in a row: kerfuffle, kerfuffle, kerfuffle, kerfuffle!

After reading the definition, I again started laughing and thought of rhyming words in a sentence:

Quite a kerfuffle started from all the people in a mad shuffle!

In the “Leave a reply” section below, go ahead and tell me — have you ever been involved in a kerfuffle?  Or, try to make a funny sentence with kerfuffle!
